April was a very busy month for everyone involved in the Ladysbridge Tidy Towns committee. Firstly there was the entry form to fill in, which was no mean feat as a lot of information had to be provided. Secondly, there was a list of jobs to do from the village survey most of which have now been tackled. Items we worked on for April were:
-
Repainting of the walls at the Church entrance, including repairs to flaking paintwork.
-
Cleaning of all signage and bins in the recycling area
-
Two additional hanging basket holders placed on the bridge on the Ladysbridge to Ballymacoda Road
-
Cleaning and re-alignment of all road signs in the village
-
Hedgerow sprayed on the Ballinacurra Road to help extend the existing planting scheme
-
The wall in front of Ladysbridge hall has been washed down
-
St. Joseph's cemetery gates have been repainted
-
The school bus stop area has been levelled and will be reseeded
-
The plough in the village car park has been thoroughly cleaned
-
All public benches in the village have been cleaned
-
The flower-bed 'welcome' area on the Castlemartyr Road has been weeded and tidied
-
A difficult to mow area on the Garryvoe Road has been sprayed and will soon be rotivated
Our thanks, as always, to the dedicated Fás workers who completed many of the above tasks on our behalf.
Meanwhile back at the greenhouse our trays of plants are coming on, though as we haven't had a huge amount of sunshine lately they're a little behind where we'd like them to be. Fingers crossed that we'll have some bright and colourful tubs to look forward to in the coming months and please remember – if you are doing a garden clear out or have some plants to donate, we'd be only too glad to take them off your hands!
May is already shaping up to be a busy month what with the Cork County Council Anti-Litter Challenge launching soon. The objectives of the competition are to reduce litter pollution in the county as a whole, and to encourage community involvement in the solutions to litter pollution. Similar to last year, the competition will be run over a 6 week period. The first period is approaching fast, running from May 21st to May 30th. Please, please help us keep Ladysbridge super-litter-free for those dates in particular. We have a title to defend, so it'd be great to have the village looking its very best! Items like this (see attached picture) dumped in the recycling area don't help! Remember that WEEE recycling is free if you take any white goods – or old TVs – to Youghal or any landfill site, they'll dispose of it free for you.

40th celebrations for Kilcredan School
The June weekend is the weekend when we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our school. As you know we are preparing a book which we hope will tell the story of life in Kilcredan through the last four decades. To date we have group photos for over thirty classes. We still require photos from the seventies. Did you go to school in the seventies? Do you have a class group photo be it Holy Communion, Confirmation or any other occasion? Would you loan it to us for a few days so that we can scan it and put it in the book?
Then of course there is the need for stories of your school days. What do you remember of life in school? What games did you play? Who were your teachers? What were your favourite subjects? If you would like to put pen to paper please do so before May 11th

Kilcredan School 40th Anniversary
Thanks to all those who have taken the time to find photographs of their school days. To date almost one hundred and fifty photos have been received. We are still looking for a number of classes in the mid to late seventies. If you have a class group, Holy Communion group or indeed a confirmation group from the 70’s or early 80’s you might share it with us.
We have just completed the list of children who have attended Kilcredan in the past forty years. The total stands at approximately 1400.
Our next request is for some writing. We hope to include a section where people write about their memories of school in Kilcredan in the various decades. This will provide an account for future students of the changes that have occurred over the years. The invitation is open to anyone who is willing to write a paragraph, a page, or indeed a manual!! Please hand in your piece to the school or to Kay Cullen Ahavine Ballymacoda by May 12th. School email is

The night of music and song held in Ladysbridge Hall on March 9th was a tribute to the late Johnny Motherway. It was hosted by Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge Community Council and Na Cairde a group that Johnny played with up to his untimely death after a brief illness last September.
Johnny was for a time our local postman during the day, at night he took on the role of local entertainer. He was involved in the Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge Community
Council and Macra Na Feirme for a number of years. It was the wish of Johnny's fellow musicians, friends and family that his life be commemorated in music and song.
